Happy Valentine’s Day!
I haven’t posted anything for a while since moving (again) and starting a new job, but I finally got a chance to create something totally new. Surfing is a very SoCal thing to do, and although I have yet to try it out, I was given the opportunity to do some surfboard wax art.
Here’s me (in my Valentine’s Day dress):
I only had time to do the middle portion before going out, but at least that is the most important part. Surfers use wax to help their feet stick on the board when they stand up, so you want the middle to have the most texture. Most surfers use plain white wax to create texture on the areas that their feet will touch, but bright neon colors are also available for those who want to do something more creative. The wax, which comes in big square blocks, was more difficult to use than I thought. At first I thought it would be like drawing with a crayon on paper, but the slick surface of the board and the hardness of the wax made it impossible to create an even distribution of color (hence the lumpiness). I had to really work the wax onto the surface to get enough color buildup.
Right before hitting the water:
Another interesting thing about surf wax art is that it is only temporary. After a few times out in the water, you have to scrape off the old wax put on a new layer. This means I might get to do some more work on this board in the future π
