Yui’s 3D sculpt is finally done! Now I can send the file to resin casters and factories to get a quote. This is the first step in streamlining her production process.
Why make a 3D sculpt when I already have the resin figure?
The original Yui doll was completely hand-sculpted, molded, and cast by myself. I really do enjoy sculpting with clay, but molding and casting a complex figure is quite difficult. I am not a professional caster, so it takes me a long time to cast each piece. Resin takes time to cure, so for each doll I have to wait a while before removing the pieces from their molds. When I made the original Mint and Purple Yui dolls for DesignerCon 2019, it took an entire day to cast 8 blank dolls, and another whole day to sand down the parting lines and clean up each piece.
The reason that I want to outsource the casting or production of Yui’s blank figure is to save time on a process that is very laborious for me. This way I can spend more time designing the looks for each doll, and making them look beautiful!
