What are BJD and MJD?

BJD stands for Ball-Jointed Doll. These dolls are typically made of resin, and have articulated joints held together by elastic cords that run inside the doll’s body and limbs. BJDs are highly customizable – you can change many parts of the doll including hair/wigs, eyes, hands, feet, clothing, and face-up (painting on the face to create unique expressions).

Mechanical Joint Dolls (MJDs) are a type of articulated doll that features joints with mechanical components, allowing for a wider range of movement and posing compared to traditional ball-jointed dolls (BJDs). While BJDs typically use elastic cords to hold the joints together, MJD joints are made of plastic or other mechanical material to achieve articulation. Like BJD, you can also change many parts of MJD to suit your tastes!

General Doll Care Advice

  • Make sure your hands are clean before playing with your doll to help maintain her condition over time.
  • Use a Magic Eraser or Melamine sponge for cleaning her skin and for general upkeep.
  • Use a gentle touch with the eraser/sponge to avoid scratching the doll. When cleaning, be cautious around delicate areas like the face or body blushing to avoid accidentally scratching the paint.
  • Keep your doll out of direct sunlight to prevent any resin discoloration and tan lines.
  • Store in a dry environment, as humidity can cause mold or oxidation.
  • If your doll is accidentally dirtied with dust, oil, pigment, etc, please gently clean it in a timely manner to avoid irreversible staining.
  • Dark clothing can cause permanent staining on your doll’s body! See the Clothing section at the bottom of this page for advice on doll clothes.

BJD Clothing

Recommended clothing and shoes for Mini BJD:

  • Any clothing sold for “OB11” or “Obitsu 11cm” dolls will fit mini BJD.
  • Some MGA OMG doll skirts and shirts may fit.
  • For the centaur dolls, pick dresses with wide skirts, which can accommodate their 4 legs. It is extra helpful if the skirts open in the back, so their tails can show!
  • Shoes are a bit harder find, but generally any OB11 shoes will fit mini BJD (except for the Centaurs, which will need a much larger size if you choose to give them shoes).
  • If shoes are too loose, putting OB11 socks on your doll can help!

Dark clothes may stain your doll’s body!
To prevent staining your BDJ with dark clothes follow these steps:

  1. Pre-Wash New Clothing: Before dressing your BJD in new dark-colored clothes, give them a gentle hand wash using mild detergent or vinegar. This can help remove excess dyes that may transfer onto your doll’s resin.
  2. Use Protective Layers: Consider using a barrier between your doll’s body and dark clothing. You can use nude-colored undergarments made of non-staining materials like cotton or silk. These layers can act as a protective barrier, reducing the chances of staining.
  3. Test the Fabrics: Before dressing your doll in dark clothing, test a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric on a less visible part of the doll’s body to ensure it won’t transfer color onto the resin.
  4. Wash Separately: Wash dark-colored clothes separately from lighter ones to prevent any potential dye transfer. Use cold water and a color-safe detergent to help minimize color bleeding.
  5. Monitor Wear and Tear: Keep an eye on the condition of your doll’s clothing. If you notice any signs of wear or fading, consider retiring those pieces to prevent further staining.
  6. Avoid Prolonged Contact: Limit the amount of time your doll wears dark-colored clothing, especially in humid or warm conditions where dye transfer is more likely to occur.

By following these precautions, you can help protect your BJD from staining while still enjoying their wardrobe.
