Saga: The Will and Lying Cat

Hello everyone! First, I want to thank you all for a very successful launch of my Delectables toy line. All four custom dunnys sold out within the first hour, and I received quite a few requests for customs.

Now about San Diego Comic Con:

This will be my very first year attending and I am beyond excited!!! My group (consisting of my, my boyfriend, and my brother) was extremely lucky this year because we all managed to get badges for each day of the convention plus Preview Night! Having a professional badge definitely helped for securing my own ticket, but I totally lucked out and was in one of the first groups to be let through the online waiting room during the general badge sale. We were also able to secure a hotel through the Early Bird Hotel Sale. Our hotel is a little further away, in San Diego’s hotel circle, but I didn’t want to take any chances with the regular hotel sale (aka Hotelpocalypse). And with the shuttles running 24/7 this year, transportation to and from the hotel should be convenient enough.

Added bonus: as LA residents we can make the 2-hour San Diego in our own car instead of flying in and getting a rental.

Now as a first time con-goer, I feel that I MUST cosplay at least one of the days in order to get the full SDCC experience. Even though we got our badges months ago, I have been so picky and indecisive about figuring out who to be. There were a few factors that I had to consider:

  1. Ease of costume-making. I’ve never really cosplayed before, so I don’t want to pick something too complicated.
  2. Weather. It’s going to be hot as hell and I would rather not be sweating in a hot costume. Also, any face paint would probably melt off by the end of the day.
  3. Comfort. We’re going to be walking around all day, so I want to feel comfortable (so no high-heeled characters lol).
  4. Something everyone can agree on! My boyfriend and I really want to cosplay as a couple, so our characters have to match and it has to be something we both agree on. This proved to be much harder than it seemed because we have different tastes in comics.

My boyfriend has been reading Saga and recommended it to me a while ago, but I never got around to reading it until recently. It’s a fantasy-action comic about star-crossed lovers trying to save their family. Definitely for adults so don’t let your kids read it!

I was immediately drawn to The Will and Lying Cat, who are a pair of assassins:

Lying Cat intrigued me because she still has a personality despite not being able to speak (except to say her name), and she has a funny relationship with her partner, The Will. They kind of remind me of Ash and Pikachu from Pokemon.

Here’s my interpretation of them in a quick and not-very-good sketch:

Sorry I’m not very good at drawing feet…

It’s going to be a bit of a time crunch trying to get the costumes complete, but I’ve already started planning and buying supplies. Keep up with me on Instagram to follow my progress!

Starting the Project

One of the most difficult parts of our Saga cosplay is Lying Cat’s armor. From photos, it looks like plate armor that is fitted to contour her back. I managed to get a light green leotard and tights off of Amazon, but the armor I would need to make myself.

I started by buying the cheap-o yoga mat from Daiso (a Japanese dollar store) for $7.

Then I had my boyfriend trace around my body on a large piece of paper – which is actually an old paper bag that I cut open. Using my body silhouette, I drew the outline of the armor.

Then I cut out the pieces.

That’s it for today. I’ll post some more photos tomorrow!

If you are interested in more detailed instructions on how to make Lying Cat’s armor, I will be writing a full tutorial on this after Comic Con!

Sanding, Sanding, More Sanding

If you read this far, you know that I have cut out all my armor pieces out of a foam yoga mat. The only problem is that the textured surface doesn’t resemble armor at all. My solution: sand it all down!

Here’s a comparison photo of the foam surface with and without sanding. I’m sure you can figure out which side is which.

It’s not a a perfectly smooth surface right now, but my arms are cramped and tired so I’m done for the day. I am also hoping that sealing and painting the surface will smooth it out.
